The government has revealed availability of more than 19.47 lakh allopathy, ayurveda, unani and homeopathy doctors at the end of March this year. Out of them, 11,59,309 allopathy doctors were registered with the State Medical Councils/ Medical Council of India. It gives a doctor-population ratio of 1:1456 per current population estimate of 1.35 billion, which is lower than the WHO norm of 1:1000. In addition to it, the Health minister informed that 4,800 MBBS seats have been reserved for economically weaker students in the current year. There has been an increase of 15,815 UG seats and 2,153 PG seats during the 2017-18 to 2019-20 period. In 2019-20, 10,565 UG seats and 2,153 PG seats have been increased, as per data provided by him to the Lower House.
